The Thunder Rolls
Submitted By Michael Lynch on Monday, February 3, 2020
On Sunday afternoon, the U16 St Marys Snipers travelled to Chatham to take on the Thunder at Erickson Arena.  This was a very pivotal game for the Snipers, as both teams entered the match with only two losses, with Chatham also having a tie.  The Snipers currently sit in first place in points, but Chatham has played four fewer games.

St Marys Jillian Sterkenburg opened the scoring five minutes in taking a free pass from Sarah Lynch making it 1 - 0. Unfortunately, that was only the second of six shots the Snipers were able to put on net in the opening frame, while Chatham bombarded St Marys goalie Arielle Barber with 26 shots on net.  Three of those shots beat Barber as Chatham took a 3 - 1 lead into intermission.

Midway through the second, while St Marys was on the power-play, an errand pass in the neutral zone, led to a Thunder rush and subsequent goal making it a 4 - 1 game.  However, just twenty seconds later, Mel Martin picked up a loose ring and fired a shot beating the Chatham net-minder and giving St Marys some hope at 4 - 2. With five minutes remaining, Lynch found the back of the net bringing the game to 4 - 3 on a feed from Martin.

Chatham added an insurance goal with a minute and a half to play giving them a 5 - 3 cushion.  Cierra Boyer netted St Marys final goal with 20 seconds remaining as St Marys fell 5 - 4.

The Thunder dominated the scoring chances out shooting St Marys 36 - 15.  For only the fourth game this season, the majority of the Snipers were in the "minus" column for Plus/Minus rating.  St Marys failed to score on the three powerplay opportunities and also gave up a short handed goal.  The Snipers will be able to regroup as they have some time off from league play with no games scheduled until February 22 when they travel to Mitchell.  St Marys is however in the Paris Ringette Association Tournament being held February 14 - 16.
