Snipers Hang-on Against Ice Crushers
Submitted By Michael Lynch on Friday, November 22, 2019
On Thursday, the U16 St Marys Snipers hosted the Goderich Ice Crushers at the PRC in WRRL action.  The Ice Crushers entered the game looking for their first win (0 - 5) of the season, while the Snipers were looking to improve on their 2 - 0 start.

St Marys dominated play keeping the ring in the Goderich zone for the first four minutes of the game eventually leading to Celeste Brandt opening the scoring after Jessica Burlingham stole the ring setting up Brandt.  Just nine seconds later Sarah Lynch put the Snipers up 2 - 0 finishing off a give-and-go from Jillian Sterkenburg. Goderich got on the board in the eighth minute on their first shot on net making it a 2 - 1 game. Anaya Larmer scored on the ensuing change of possession giving St Marys a 3 - 1 lead, but the two goal lead was short-lived as the Ice Crushers scored just nine seconds later bringing it back to a one goal game at 3 - 2.  Keeping the fast and furious goal scoring going, Lynch fed Sterkenburg who made no mistake putting St Marys up 4 - 2 after the teams scored four goals in just a minute and a half.

With four minutes to go in the half and while being short-handed, Cierra Boyer put St Marys up 5 - 2 with Larmer picking up the assist.  Lynch notched her second of the half as she and Sterkenburg combined again with two minutes remaining. Grace Shearer closed out the first half scoring after being set up by Mel Martin giving the Snipers a 7 - 3 lead into the intermission.

After outshooting Goderich 23 - 7 in the first half, it appeared St Marys was on their way to a dominant game.  However, the Ice Crushers and six Sniper penalties had other plans! 7 - 4,

7 - 5, 7 - 6, Goderich was back in it.  Fourteen of the sixteen shots Goderich had on goalie Arielle Barber came on the powerplay.

With four minutes to play, the Ice Crushers went on another powerplay, but a great defensive play by Caitlynn Jantzi broke up a cross ice pass.  The ring squirted out to the neutral zone where Martin picked it up and fed Boyer in the attacking end. Boyer fired a hard shot past the Goderich goalie giving Boyer her second of the game while giving the Snipers some breathing room at 8 - 6.  St Marys hung on to secure the win and improve to 3 - 0.

St Marys hosts first place Mitchell (6 - 0) on November 28, 7:15 at the PRC.
