Snipers Edge the Edge in Fergus
Submitted By Michael Lynch on Friday, November 15, 2019
On Thursday, the U16 St Marys Snipers travelled to Fergus to take on the Elora Fergus Edge at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.  The Snipers, looking to forget their disappointing weekend at the London Tournament, were excited to return to league play in only their second WRRL game of the year. Unfortunately, the Edge jumped out to a quick 2 - 0 lead before Mel Martin put the Snipers on the board on a feed from Cierra Boyer.  Despite being outshot 20 - 7 in the first half and being short-handed for six of the fifteen minutes, goalie Arielle Barber turned aside several scoring chances to keep the Snipers in the game.

Five minutes into the second, Elora Fergus jumped out to a 3 - 1 lead after a seemingly harmless dump-in was misplayed in front of the net for an easy Edge goal. Sarah Lynch though, scored just 20 seconds later on a pass from Kierra Batton making it a 3 - 2 game.  With five minutes to go, Boyer went in unassisted notching the game at 3 - 3. As the momentum was building, Anaya Larmer, Boyer and Grace Shearer combined giving the Snipers a 4 - 3 lead with four minutes remaining. Play continued at both ends with each team having chances, but Larmer clinched it for St Marys with 24 seconds remaining giving the Sniper the 5 - 3 win.

St Marys outshot the Edge 17 - 14 in the second half, but it was Elora Fergus who held the “edge” in shots for the game outshooting St Marys 34 - 24.  Barber picked up the win as the Snipers improve to 2 - 0 in league play. St Marys will host Goderich on the 21st at the PRC.
