Snipers Calm Storm
Submitted By Michael Lynch on Saturday, February 22, 2014
In U9 Ringette action, the Norampac Snipers played host to the Woolwich Storm at the PRC on Saturday.  Starting in goal was Arielle Barber and she was tested early but turned back an opening barrage.  The Snipers we equal to the challenge and pounded the Storm goalie with four quick shots before Isabella Aarts put the home town squad on the board making it 1 – 0.

Woolwich stormed back though tying the game at 1 – 1 on the next possession.  Unfazed, the Snipers answered after Megan Richardson set up Sarah Lynch who went five hole to give St Marys the lead once again at 2 – 1.  Woolwich came right back on the ensuing free pass, but Barber held her ground and preserved the lead.  Unfortunately, they kept up the attack and tied the game 2 – 2 at the five minute mark.   It was up and down action, then with thirty-two seconds remaining in the first half, Anaya Larmer made a great steal and hit Lynch who gave St Marys the lead once again at 3 – 2.  It looked as though Woolwich was going to tie it up once more with a buzzer-beater but just shot it over the crossbar and the teams went into the intermission.

To open the second, Aarts took over the duties in net and hungry Woolwich put the pressure on and slipped one by tying the game once more at 3 – 3.  Chances at both ends went unanswered before Richardson found the back of net giving St Marys the lead at 4 - 3.  Woolwich kept on battling and tied the game 4 – 4 at the nine minute mark.  Off the ensuing drop, Richardson set up Lynch who put the Snipers in front 5 – 4. With eight minutes remaining, the Storm picked up a loose ring and again the game was notched.   Both teams battled hard, and Aarts made a great save which then turned the ring back up the ice, allowing Kaylee Fowler to score making it 6 – 5 with five minutes to play.  It looked as though Snipers were cruising but like the entire game, this see-saw battle would yet again unfold and Woolwich tied it up with just over two minutes to play.  Holding true to this format, Niamh Brennan, made a long pass to Barber who found Jillian Sterkenburg who lifted St Marys to a 7 – 6 lead with less than two minutes remaining.  The crowd was buzzing, and everyone was wondering at what point Woolwich would tie it back up, but Sterkenburg broke the trend off a pass from Olivia Nugent making it 8 – 6 with a minute to play giving the Snipers a little breathing room.  Woolwich continued the pressure but a scrum at centre, had Lynch pick up the ring and sent Richardson in alone to finish out the scoring and give St Marys the 9 – 6 victory.  After the game, Lynch described the game as “good!”  The Snipers get a long break with their next game taking place March 8 when they host Wellington North at the PRC on March 8.
